2020 Tokyo Olympic Hopeful
Kevin McDowell finished the 2019 ITU/Olympic distance race season with three World Cup podiums and seven Top-5 finishes – hitting his stride in preparation for Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification. Kevin was a 2018 bronze medalist in the ITU Mixed Relay World Championships, where he helped establish Team USA as a medal contender for the event’s Olympic debut in Tokyo. In 2017, Kevin earned multiple ITU World Cup podiums, earning him the title of USA Triathlon Elite National Champion and Top-ranked American (23rd).
Kevin began swimming at age 7, completed his first triathlon at age 10 and joined his first triathlon team at age 11. He was a junior phenom and a 2010 World Junior Bronze Medalist. Only days after his first pro race in 2011, Kevin received a devastating diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, requiring six months of chemotherapy. Ultimately, Kevin was forced to step away from triathlon for five months, instead focusing on earning a business degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Meticulous about proper recovery and nutrition and encouraged by his mom whose profession is nursing, Kevin slowly rebuilt his strength. He was declared cancer-free at his milestone five-year exam in 2016 – a year also reflecting athletic success with a pair of ITU World Cup podiums and multiple Top-20 ITU WTS finishes.
In 2018, Kevin was a member of the bronze medal winning team at the Hamburg ITU Triathlon Mixed Relay World Championships. Kevin also podium'd at the Avon Major League Triathlon Super Sprint, demonstrating his talent at the increasingly popular format. Kevin is powering up for a huge year of racing in 2020, not to mention individual qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics as well as a team spot on the Mixed Relay. Mixed Relay will be making its Olympic debut in Tokyo, it’s a thrilling, action packed format where 2 men + 2 women comprise the team for each country and go head to head in a sprint triathlon. Kevin’s perseverance, work ethic and sheer love of triathlon fueled his grueling battle with cancer and propelled him to a national championship and the international podium...and looking ahead, towards his first Olympic Team.
Kevin volunteers time with Cal’s Angel’s and other organizations who support kids battling cancer.
