Kevin McDowell

Kevin McDowell (25 yrs) finished the 2017 ITU/Olympic distance race season with multiple ITU World Cup podiums, earning him the title of USA Triathlon Elite National Champion and Top-ranked American (23rd).
2018 will be an intense race season focused on the World Triathlon Series, the primary qualifier for the Olympics.  Kevin is targeting both individual qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics as well as a team spot on the recently added Mixed Relay – a thrilling, action packed format where 2 men + 2 women comprise the team for each country. Kevin is committed to elevating his ITU performance, confident he can hold onto the top American spot as well as elevate his world ranking.
Kevin began swimming at age 7, completed his first triathlon at age 10 and joined his first triathlon team at age 11.  He was a junior phenom, a 2010 World Junior Bronze Medalist, who was on a steep upward trajectory until March 2011.  Only days after his first pro race, Kevin received a devastating diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Kevin underwent six months of chemotherapy, which ravaged him physically and emotionally, and ultimately required him to step away from the sport for five months.
Instead of training, Kevin focused on taking college courses – he earned a business degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.  Meticulous about proper recovery and nutrition and encouraged by his mom who was a nurse, Kevin slowly rebuilt his strength.  He was declared cancer-free at his milestone five-year exam in 2016 – a year also reflecting athletic success with a pair of ITU World Cup podiums and multiple Top-20 ITU WTS finishes. Kevin’s perseverance, work ethic and sheer love of triathlon fueled his grueling battle with cancer and propelled him to a national championship and the international podium...moving forward, towards his first Olympic Team.
Kevin volunteers time with Cal’s Angel’s and other organizations who support kids battling cancer.
