Tim Don Named British Long-distance Triathlete Of The Year, Finishes 2nd At Ironman 70.3 Xiamen: Weekend Wrap-up
Olympian and IRONMAN champion Tim Don (GBR) celebrated two achievements this weekend: being named Male Elite Long Distance Triathlete of the Year by British Triathlon, and just hours later, finishing second at the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen.
“Congratulations to Tim for the well-deserved British Triathlon award. A few years ago he proved he was a threat at the half distance, which is common for athletes coming from ITU racing. He’s now demonstrated he can win at any distance,” said Human Interest Group Director Michael Cardoza.
“With so many impressive Brits taking over the triathlon podiums, it’s great to see British Triathlon single out Tim for his athleticism and, I think, attitude. The podium finish in Xiamen is like the icing on the cake for Tim’s season. Way to go, Tim!”
British Triathlon Award – Male Elite Long Distance Triathlete
British Triathlon, the country’s Olympic governing body, named Don the 2016 Male Elite Long Distance Triathlete of the year at its annual award ceremony on Saturday. One of twenty athletes, parathletes, coaches, and patrons recognized their performances and contributions to the sport, Don joined Jodie Swallow in winning the male and female Elite Long Distance Triathlete Awards.
“It’s always an honor to be recognized for what you work hard at. It means a lot, especially considering I am still relatively new to long distance racing,” Don said after learning he was awarded British Elite Long Distance Triathlete of the Year. .
IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen – 2nd Place
At the inaugural IRONAM 70.3 Xiamen in China, Don claimed the second fastest swim (28:35), bike (2:06:29), and run (1:17:59) splits. Shifting into his formidable high-speed gear during the run, Don erased most of the large lead that eventual victor Josh Amberger created earlier on the swim and bike legs. Don, despite his persistence, finished in second place about 1:30 behind Amberger.
The Xiamen race concludes another impressive season for Don highlighted by the IRONMAN 70.3 South American Championship title, a top-ten finish (7th place) at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, and a strong performance at the Island House Invitational Triathlon.
