Hoffman Sprints To Third Place At Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz: Weekend Wrap-up

Published September 12th, 2016 by Devteam

Only one second behind his closest competitor, all-American IRONMAN champion Ben Hoffman (USA) sprinted to a third place finish at IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz on Sunday. Radka Vodičková (CZE) also raced this weekend, taking fifth place at the olympic-distance Beijing International Triathlon.

Human Interest Group director Michael Cardoza congratulated Hoffman and Vodičková. “Good job by Ben to stay strong and fast throughout the race. Missing second place by a blink of the eye is disappointing, but Santa Cruz gives Ben useful info for his ultimate goal – taking the 2016 IRONMAN World Champion title in a few weeks.”

“Congrats too to Rads. Less than one week after coming in 9th at a competitive 70.3 World Championship, she was back at work. This year the Beijing Tri was pretty stacked with speed so even though 5th is far from where Radka typically finishes, it was still a solid day.”

Ben Hoffman – 3rd Place IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz

After exiting the water among the top ten pros, Hoffman quickly caught up with the chase pack on the bike and clocked 2:10:06 for the third fastest split of the day. Hoffman started the run with a core pack fighting for a podium spot, and that’s where he stayed until the sprint finish. With just a second separating him from the number two spot, Hoffman finished the race with a 1:13:35 run split and an overall time of 3:53:18.

The podium-worthy performance at the California race comes as Hoffman prepares for the iconic IRONMAN World Championship where he took 2nd place in 2014. This year, Hoffman added the IRONMAN African Championship title to his career accomplishments.

An always positive Hoffman said (via Instagram), “Happy with my effort for 3rd. Still some work to do, but lots of positives. Thanks to the pro men for pushing me, and congrats to all racers. Thank you to my amazing sponsors and fans for all the support… On to Kona!”
