1-2-3: Heather Wurtele Continues 1st Place Streak, Trevor Wurtele Runs To 2nd At Ironman 70.3 Victoria, And Sam Appleton Goes Big To Take 3rd At Ironman 70.3 Boulder: Weekend Wrap-up
Triathlon’s power couple Team Wurtele took the podium at this weekend’s IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria with reigning IRONMAN 70.3 North American Champ Heather Wurtele (CAN) easily capturing 1st place and Trevor Wurtele (CAN) running to 2nd. Next gen star Sam Appleton (AUS) also stayed strong throughout IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder to claim 3rd place.
The win in Victoria is the fourth consecutive 1st place finish for Heather Wurtele in 2016. Wurtele has taken the top spot at all of the races entered this year: IRONMAN 70.3 North American Championship/St. George, IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey, and IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside/California.
At the legendary Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Mauricio Mendez (MEX) applied his off-road power to the urban course for the 3rd fastest run and 6th place overall finish (2:11:01), while two-time XTERRA world champion Lesley Paterson (GBR) rounded out the top ten pro women with a 9th place finish (2:38:24).
“The Pro Tri crew was working hard this weekend, and we especially congratulate Team Wurtele and Sam Appleton for reaching the podium once again this season. These three are putting out consistent performances and we’re excited to see what they can do come September and October,” said the Human Interest Group Director Michael Cardoza.
“It was great to watch Heather stretch her unbeaten streak another weekend with the Victoria win. She is putting together a phenomenal season of solid victories, and should be considered a top competitor for the fall’s IRONMAN 70.3 world championships. Trevor too is having a good season as his performance in Victoria showed. And Appo demonstrated true grit to shadow Joe Gambles, who virtually owns the course at Boulder 70.3.”
“Along with Heather, Trev, and Appo, Mauricio, Lesley, Jake all raced well to finish in the top ten at their races too. Congrats to all.”
Team Wurtele Takes IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria Podium
Team Wurtele had strong performances on Vancouver Island against their fellow Canadian pros. Heather dominated the female race throughout the race with the fastest swim (19:57) and second-fastest bike (2:25:42) and run (1:24;51) splits. On the final leg of the race, Heather relied upon her trademark fast and strong legs to comfortably secure the victory. Heather crossed the finish line first at 4:13:06, about six minutes ahead of her closest competitor.
“It was great to be back in our old stomping ground. We love this course and the spectators were incredible today. It’s always nice to get the win, and even better when we both have good days,” Heather said following the race.
Trevor stayed in the lead male pro pack during the day by first leaving the water just a minute behind the top two swimmers. He was part of the front edge on the bike and alternated the lead with eventual winner Taylor Reid; Trevor had the fourth fastest bike of the day with a 2:10:46 time. As Heather did, Trevor turned on his foot speed to secure his podium spot. Trevor’s run (1:17:57) pushed him across the finish line less than a minute behind Reid, earning second place with a final time of 3:49:56.
Team Wurtele will race together next at IRONMAN 70.3 Mount Tremblant. Following that, Heather is scheduled to race Challenge Iceland and Trevor IRONMAN Canada.
Appleton Adds IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder to Career Podium List
Racing for the first time at IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder, Sam Appleton withstood heat from the sun and competition to start and stay strong for a third place finish. Appleton was part of the lead pack in the swim (24:49), bike (1:56:36) and run (1:19:13), having the third fastest time among the male pros. On the bike, Appleton showed why he is considered one of triathlon’s next gen superstars by pushing the pack. Appleton finished the race about two and half minutes behind first place with a final time of 3:44:00.
Appleton is scheduled to next race IRONMAN 70.3 Vineman.
Also in his IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder debut, ITU-turned-70.3 Champ Jake Montgomery (AUS) finished in 10th place despite an unexplained penalty on the bike.
