2009 will be remembered for a lot of historical events...and in the sport of triathlon, Greg and Laura Bennett's entrance into long course triathlon could be one of them. This past weekend, the Bennetts showed up at their first ever Ironman 70.3 in Augusta, GA (also a first time event in 09) after a long year of hosting injuries as well as a viscous car crash that ended in a loss for Greg's nose as well as his Orbea bike. Nonetheless, Greg Bennett proved that he is a real threat for the 70.3 world championships by taking top honors at Augusta, home to the world famous golf tournament. Chris Legh placed an impressive second just a few minutes behind Bennett and with a freshly broken rib (due to accident the night before the race).
America's top female Olympian triathlete, Laura Bennett made her presence known in the half-Ironman circuit with a first place victory over Kelly Williamson by a near 6 seconds. Laura's focus now turns towards Clearwater 70.3 World Championships in November. She has been known to step up in the world's highest profile races (Olympic Games, Hy-Vee, Lifetime, etc) and is the true master race preparation Jedi in the Bennett house.
