IRONMAN champion Rachel Joyce jumpstarted her 2016 season with an impressive 2nd place finish at the IRONMAN 70.3 Pucón this past weekend. The early-season race in southern Chile was the first IRONMAN competition for Joyce since she took 2nd place at the 2015 IRONMAN World Championship, her third podium finish in as many years at the iconic triathlon held in Hawaii.

“We are thrilled that Rachel is starting the season strong. She had a nice break following Kona and, with the Pucón race, it’s apparent that Rachel is already building from the foundation she worked so hard to create last year. It’s going to be a fun year watching Rachel make her way back to the IRONMAN podium in Kona,” said Michael Cardoza, director of The Huma Interest Group.

With a final time of 4:41:20, Joyce pounded out the fastest run time among the pro women field, finishing her run at 1:28:02. Earlier in the race, Joyce stayed in the lead pack with 4th place in both swim (28:24) and bike (2:36:07). Showing no loss in run speed during the holidays, Joyce moved past her competitors and crossed the IRONMAN 70.3 Pucón finish line just behind the repeat champion.

“I didn’t win but pulling off second after being 10 mins down in T2 felt like a win for today. If you’re even thinking about doing Pucon 70.3, my advice is Do it!,” said Rachel after the race.

Along her 2nd place finish at 2015 IRONMAN World Championship, Joyce starts the new year buoyed by other successes from her 2015 season, including capturing 3rd at the IRONMAN Texas and 2nd at Challenge Bahrain, joining the new international triathlon squad of Team Bravo, and overcoming a mid-season injury. A professional triathlete since 2008, Joyce lives year-round in Boulder, CO.
